The Metaphorical Magpie is Five!

I can hardly believe it but today is the five year blogiversary for The Metaphorical Magpie.

When I started this blog, I thought it was going to be one thing but it led to another and another and another. Life is funny that way and so, evidently is blogging. I thought I was going to report mostly on my rock and rolling exploits and soon found myself more drawn to musing about my garden, running haiku free-for-alls, organizing the amazing wish tree project, sharing self portraits via (the now sadly defunct) Self Portrait Challenge and whatever else has caught my magpie's eye over the last five years.

I've also found myself drawn into the lives of so many new friends all over the world through blogging. That is the most amazing part, finding the kindred spirits, recognizing them and reaching out to one another.

Sometimes I wonder why I blog. I think of quitting. I imagine the void it would leave in my life. I imagine the void being filled with a new hobby. But blogging isn't just a hobby. It's become a form of self expression. I find myself coming here to work things out. Only when words move through me as a writer, do I process the bits that get stuck deep within. Writing dislodges those thoughts and emotions. I need this place to put them.

And I need the friends that gather here, too.

Happy Blogiversary! I've recently jumped back into blogging after spending most of the last year away from it. I realize now (and I should have known after all my ups and downs with blogging over the last 6 years) that it can't be forced...one has to be ready for the pleasures that it gives. And sometimes there's not room in one's life for the pleasures...sometimes the pain won't make way. ;) Look forward to reading here again. Twitter's been a godsend in recent times when I didn't have the energy to blog...but, for me, there's nothing like the community and connection I feel among my blogging circle. Hope you're well.

i love what you said about it not just a hobby but a place for self-expression, its so true and i often go to my little space to work things out, sometimes just typing it helps and i don't even always post, tee hee
